About the Book
In 1997, the University of Michigan found itself at the center of a national controversy over affirmative action. Two white students, Jennifer Gratz and Patrick Hamacher, sued the university, alleging that its affirmative action policy discriminated against them on the basis of race. The case made its way to the Supreme Court, which ruled in 2003 that the university's undergraduate admissions policy was unconstitutional. However, the Court upheld the university's law school admissions policy, which used race as a factor in admissions decisions.
The battle over affirmative action at the University of Michigan was a watershed moment in the history of race and education in the United States. The case sparked a national debate about the role of race in college admissions, and its outcome has had a profound impact on American society. This book tells the story of the case from the inside, providing a unique perspective on one of the most important civil rights cases of our time.
Authors
The book is written by two of the lawyers who argued the case before the Supreme Court: Barbara Grutter and Ted Shaw. Grutter is a professor of law at the University of Michigan, and Shaw is a partner at the law firm WilmerHale. Both Grutter and Shaw have written extensively about affirmative action, and their book provides a comprehensive and authoritative account of the case.
