The raiders' objective was to destroy the Normandie Dock, the only dry dock on the Atlantic coast capable of handling the German battleship Tirpitz.

The raid was a success, with the commandos successfully destroying the Normandie Dock and inflicting heavy casualties on the German garrison. However, the raid came at a cost, with 169 commandos killed, wounded, or captured.
